Friday, 2/15 -> Denver Dre Day 2013 at The Solution w/DJ Low Key, Lazy Eyez & special guest DJ Dozen at the Meadowlark…A night full of everything Dr. Dre & more…

FRIDAY, 2/15 -> Before we even talk about Dre Day, I gotta shout out everyone who came out to our weekly relaunch/6 year anniversary party/#TheSolution6 kickoff last Friday at the Meadowlark.  I knew it was going to be a good night, but calling it a good party would be an understatement; after a wall to wall packed turnout, complete with a super cool crowd going wild to great music from the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Donald Byrd & Dilla, I think it’s safe to say The Solution’s new weekly home is a hit.  Special guest DJ Izer, Sounds Supreme, Lazy Eyez, and surprise guest DJ Chris Karns aka the DJ formerly known as Vajra aka 2011 DMC world champion, DJ legend and Yelawolf’s touring DJ all tore things down while the crowd went on one wild musical ride (my set went over pretty well too, check out what I played here).  Whether you made it out or not, there are a ton of beautiful pictures of the party on Westword.com and via the Meadowlark’s photobooth on The Solution’s facebook page that you should take a look at.

So let’s talk Dre Day.  Dre Day is a national phenomenon that’s popped up over last few years, as parties all over the country are taking it upon themselves to honor to music and career of Andre Young aka Dr. Dre.  I’m not sure if there’s been one in Denver before, but we’re excited to make one happen.  Me, Lazy Eyez and special guest DJ Dozen (Welcome To The D.O.P.E. Game) will be holding down the turntables and spinning everything Dre related, from the World Class Cru days through the N.W.A-era into the Death Row dynasty and onward to the Aftermath and “Detox” eras, complete with guest spots, original samples, features, other production and everything else Dre’s been affiliated with, all the way up to his Kendrick verses.  21+/Free until 11/$5 after/2701 Larimer St. – DJ Low Key

Meet Fast Forward, our featured Denver producer for The Solution Showcase #9 on Saturday, 9/22 at the Meadowlark…

Denver meet Fast Forward.  The elusive producer/DJ has been making a name for himself in some of the most notable Denver circles for years, but still somehow remains one of Denver’s best kept secrets.  Ask 2011 World DMC Champion DJ Vajra about Fast Forward and he’ll rave about his skills, as the two have collabed on numerous projects over the years.  Take a look at the clip below to see some of what these two musical geniuses do when they get together.

Fast Forward & DJ Vajra are Dirty Southpause “Time 4 Tacos”

Fast Forward is way more than a DJ Vajra bandmate though, in fact, he’s a one man band onto himself, playing drums, keys, singing, scratching and more in his live performances.  You can also catch Fast Forward and DJ Check One’s collaborative project, Fun Addicts, here.  A man of few words, catch more live video from Fast Forward on his youtube channel and you’ll be sold on dude’s diverse talents, just like me, Vajra and countless other heads in Denver.

Please take a quick minute & vote DJ Low Key in the 2011 Westword Music Showcase…

From djlowkey.com: What’s up world?  I wanted to check in and see if you’d do me the quick favor of heading over to Westword.com and voting for me for best hip hop DJ in the Westword Music Showcase.  Voting is easy and painless and since I’m up against such Colorado DJ heavyweights as defending DMC NYC champion DJ Cysko Rokwel, Moolah Boy K-Tone, Solution co-founder Sounds Supreme and world renowned turntablist DJ Vajra, I’m gonna need your help to follow up my win in 2010 (Thanks again Denver, I also won in 2008 and I think a win this year would make me the first three time winner; please help me make history).  I have a ton of respect for all four of the other competitors and they’re all friends of mine, but you can’t vote for everybody so you might as well vote DJ Low Key (category 39).

And most importantly, thanks for the support in the contest and my DJ career, whether or not I win. I couldn’t do what I do for a living without the support of fine people like yourself and I know, appreciate and relish that.

P.S. If I win, I’ll make a mixtape for y’all or throw a party or both or something else that’s even better, trust.

Shouts to Lazy Eyez & #COHipHop…Check out DJ legend Rob Swift’s post about the 2011 Denver DMC event he put together…

Lazy Eyez is a super modest guy and I’m sure he’d never think to post this on here, but me, I’m shameless and had to show y’all what Rob Swift (of the LEGENDARY X-Ecutioner’s DJ crew) had to say about the 2011 Denver Regional DMC battle that Lazy put together last month.  It’s not the first time that Lazy has single-handedly put the time, money and effort up to ensure that the DMCs had a regional battle in Colorado, but from all accounts, this year’s battle was the most classic one yet.  Recent Thre3 Style Boulder winner and world renowned turntablist DJ Vajra beat out runner-up Cysko Rokwel (another world famous battle DJ from here in Denver), third place finisher B-Money (in a three-way tie w/Jeff C & Wax Shreds) and a host of other great turntablists to take the title, but Cysko’s set was so exceptional that he was given the rare runner up invite to return to the US DMC finals in NY.  I’m sure some video from the event will be popping up soon, but in the meantime, get ready to root for Vajra & Cysko in the national DMC finals and pat yourselves on the back Denver, Lazy and everyone who participated.  With that said, check out Rob Swift’s perspective on the event below. – DJ Low Key

2011’s Denver, Colorado DMC Regional was dope, PERIOD! It had a throwback feel to it. Some of ya’ll reading this probably weren’t around during the time of the New Music Seminar Battles for World Supremacy back in the day but that’s what last night’s Denver heat reminded me of. I myself was too young to actually attend the early NMS battles of the 1980s so I resorted to tracking down the NMS VHS tapes from years like 1988 and 89 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srcpASrIfF8 *man do I miss watching cats cut up straight vinyl, but I digress…). By the time 1990’s NMS battle came around, I finally made the pilgrimage into Times Square to witness my very first DJ battle in person. The experience was pivotal in my life. Actually being there and standing a few feet away from heroes like DJ Aladdin, Busy B Starski and Ice Cube had a huge impact on my decision to choose the path I have as a DJ. Something tells me there was someone in that audience who was inspired just like I was when I attended my first battle.  Last night wasn’t just about the DJs. Denver’s DMC regional also celebrated other elements of Hip Hop. There was a B-Boy and MC battle which reminded me of the 1989 NMS. Granted 89s NMS Dance Battle was more of a “Kid N’ Play” dance style of battle so it didn’t encompass the intricacies I saw the B-Boys display in Denver. But nonetheless, Denver was yet another reminder that a person’s uncontrollable urge to move to the music Turntablists/Battle DJs like us create still holds true. Just as it did in 89! Even the Graff element was being represented (Big Shout to The Signtologist for hitting me off with probably the coolest gift I’ve ever received from a fellow artist).  To all the DJs, MCs and Dancers who competed, I SALUTE YOU! These days, I can’t help but feel like other genres of music like Dubstep and Electro seem to be taking away some of the attention away from Hip Hop. Whether that’s really happening or not, it was refreshing to see all of you stay true to the core principals of OUR culture ——–> Love, Peace, Unity and Having Fun!  Honorable mention goes to DJ Lazy Eyez aka Sean Choi and Christie Z. Pabon for sacrificing their time and energy to put together such a successful Hip Hop event. I’d also like to send mad love out to Casselmans for hosting all of us at such a beautiful venue.  Here’s to Hip Hop in Denver and everywhere else in the world!  Rob Swift
